Rebecca at Fidelity

"Fidelity offered me the chance to have more of a business focus, with more involvement and longer-term projects."

Current Position: Group Controlling Manager
Business Area: Finance
Joined: 2005
Studied: Equine Business Management at Wye College, University of London

Before Fidelity I worked with a large European firm of accountants doing accountancy training. I'd move from client to client, spending a couple of weeks with each, but as I rarely got to see the end results of my work, after a while I began to find it unsatisfying. Instead, I wanted to get into a world where I could see things from the other side. Fidelity offered me the chance to have more of a business focus, with more involvement and longer-term projects.

Group Controlling involves dealing with all the different companies within Fidelity and ensuring that the consolidation of the results is correct. So we do monthly reporting packs, and the all-important end of year results. It's a customer-focused role - I deal with a lot of different people all over the world, such as controllers in Bermuda and India. You could say that we're looking at the big picture for the company - but we also have an investigatory role where we try to find the root causes of varying results.

The first shock for me was being in the same place every day - I was used to travelling around, but I found I enjoyed the consistency of the work and the team spirit. The second thing I had to adjust to was the deadline-driven nature of the work. The nature of our role means that at some periods we are busier than others. That means I have to work hard to balance my workload - Fidelity is all about taking responsibility and I had to find that balance. But there's a great sense of teamwork here - especially in my department. We all share the workload and help each other out when we're busy. Our busiest time is just before the publication of year-end results. These absolutely have to be on time and completely accurate. If they aren't the company's reputation could be damaged.

It's good to work for such a professional organisation. Everything runs very smoothly here - it's all set up to help you do the best job possible. I feel trusted, and my work is rewarded too. And the opportunities I've had are second to none - I've already had the opportunity to visit our headquarters in Bermuda twice, and I'm going again the week after next.
